Competition Robotics
Penguin Coding School has been coaching competition robotics teams since 2017. We field multiple teams every year and a few of our top teams have made it to the state championships. There are two levels based on age & experience: First Lego League (FLL) for ages 9-12 which uses Lego Robot kits to complete mission challenges and research an innovative solution to a global problem and First Tech Challenge (FTC) for ages 12-18 which uses metal pieces, nuts & bolts, motors & servos to build "real" robots and organize community outreach and team fundraisers.
What is First Lego League?
First Lego League (FLL) is organized by a global non-profit called FIRST. Kids ages 9-12 participate in a season that spans 4-6 months where they build a fully autonomous Lego robot to solve various mission challenges, research an innovative solution to a global problem, and demonstrate teamwork and gracious professionalism.
Available to all skill levels and no pre-requisites, the season runs from September to December with teams made up of 4-6 students. We are open to coaching pre-existing teams or groups of friends if scheduling allows.
At the end of the season, there is a Regional Tournament in one of many cities in Massachusetts that the teams will get to participate in. The all-day tournament is a great experience for our students to see excited students from all over the state compete and have fun.
FLL Course Offerings
Exact schedule & team composition for FLL teams will be decided in September. We offer Lego Robotics classes that students can take in the Spring that will help students prepare and gain knowledge in Lego Robotics, as well as during our weeklong Summer day sessions.

What is the First Technical Challenge (FTC)?
FTC is the next level up from FLL Challenges. For students ages 12-18, the FTC season extends from September to February/March of the following year.
Unlike FLL, FTC does not use Lego parts. The robots are 18 in. x 18 in. and use metal pieces that are often custom built with 3D printers, and they have much larger motors. The coding language used is Java.
Penguin Coding School’s FTC team is meant to be a preparatory step for high school robotics and is an opportunity for students to experience an advanced level of robotics while still in middle school. We also mentor a separate high school team that competes with other high school teams.
FTC Course Offerings
FTC teams & classes are only available in our Lexington and Brookline locations.
(please email info@penguincodingschool.com if you are interested in FTC Teams in another location).
During the summer there will be an FTC Middle School Camp for students interested in trying out FTC Robotics in Brookline.
