Robotics Competitions for Kids:  A Student's Perspective

Have you ever heard of robotics competitions?

Penguin Coding School has been coaching competition robotics teams since 2017. We have multiple teams every year, and have won awards each year since 2019.

There are two levels based on age & experience:

  1. First Lego League (FLL) for ages 9-14 which uses Lego Robot kits to complete mission challenges and research an innovative solution to a global problem

  2. First Tech Challenge (FTC) for ages 12-18 which uses metal pieces, nuts & bolts, motors & servos to build "real" robots and organize community outreach and team fundraisers

This week, one of our team members sat down with Sophie, a Penguin Coding student and robotics team alumni, to ask a few questions about her experience on the First Lego League team.

Q: Who can participate in First Lego League robotics?

A: First Lego League (FLL) is suited for multiple different age groups varying from 9-14, due to its blend of robotics, coding, innovation, and teamwork. Each year thousands of students participate in the FLL season, where they work in teams. FLL introduces a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Q: How does First Lego League robotics work?

A: Using Lego Mindstorms technology, they get to build and program robots to tackle challenges based on real-world problems, which utilizes their technical skills and also teaches valuable lessons in teamwork, problem-solving and communication.

Q: Why do students like First Lego League robotics?

A: What makes FLL so enjoyable to students is its approach to learning. Each season, teams dive into a real-world challenge such as sustainability or cargo, prompting students to think more deeply about these issues and brainstorm solutions. Beyond just building robots, FLL spreads awareness and empathy through this.

Throughout the season students grow as they learn to solve obstacles and setbacks. FLL competitions are very exciting for most students and add motivation where each student can showcase their creativity and what they learned throughout the season.
